Either way it should be a fun event - and remember, it is Ballarat's first cosplay competition, so we weren't expecting hoards of people to turn up....

well we can't do best male and female, because we only have 2 or 3 females entering... and only a few males too... so we'd end up with too many category's if we had those two... in my opinion anyway... well we have lots of intrest on the manifest forums and i think there will be more then just 2 or 3 females entering rowan will get back to u on catagories and scoring

I just had an idea for a possible sponsor, Guf and/or Good Games. Have we tried contacting them?

I just had a weird idea...
Sovereign Hill.
Sure its not the cheapest sort of option as a venue and I don't know if they'd make good sponsors, but think of the photographic possibilities! Its a far-fetched idea, but if it can get off the ground, I wager people will travel pretty far just to cosplay there.
A cheaper option might be the botanical gardens, as either a sponsor or a venue...

I'm pretty sure the venue is worked out and booked already. As sponsors... perhaps, although i don't think they would see any profit in the advertising through us if they sponsored us, considering most people in Victoria already know about sovereign hill.
Perhaps the Asian grocery in bridge mall? They are not very well known, and being exposed to people who like Japanese culture and food would be a good boost for them, at least thats what i would think if i was in their shoes.

lol that would be a good idea if I wanted to do a Simon (TTGL) Cosplay. Speaking of which, that cosplay might not be such a bad idea.

I get what you mean about Sovereign Hill...I wouldn't have a clue as I only moved here recently.
I'd be a teensy bit careful about that store. If you go in and have a look, other than a few boxes of Pocky (and its the cheaper Thai-made version I think?) they have very, very little Japanese stuff. In fact its probably more accurate to call it a Korean grocery as that is what the bulk of the items are and that seems to be the language the staff use with each other.
the Koreans and the Japanese have centuries of animousity between each other, and there is a lot of nastiness happening on internet forums etc where large numbers of the two meet. Each believes that their culture (including things like animation, comics, music etc) is superior with nationalistic zeal. I wouldn't ignore that option altogether, but you'd probably need to use some other excuse than Japanese culture to appeal to them.
That, and their goods are horribly overpriced compared to the same in Melbourne.
How about getting sponsorship from Japanese Student Associations in universities? Or perhaps sushi joints?

Hmm...when I went in last week I only saw Korean stuff, there was Japanese stuff which was relatively uncommon and expensive...and Pocky is everywhere lol.
There is a Japanese culture and clothing store up in Daylesford, considering how far it is from Ballarat or Melbourne, its prices are surprisingly very reasonable. Mostly its upmarket womens' apparel, but also things like traditional household goods and kimonos. Its quite famous and popular apparently. I wonder if they would be worth approaching too.

I'm pretty serious in that Daylesford can potentially be mined for anime/cosplay/etc enthusiasts. It does attract quite a young and trendy crowd (whatever their sexual orientation), and has experienced a bit of a surge in population growth as apparently quite a lot of bushfire-affected families moved there.
If there are enough copies of posters, I'd at least like to be able to put some up at Daylesford.
One way that the Japanese store could reap a decent profit out of the event is by sponsoring prizes in the form of vouchers. If people actually turn up in Daylesford to check out their stuff, its all well and good. If they don't, they still get publicity.
