Not Melbourne, but i'm going to Adelaide's AVCON avcon.org.au (15 to 17 july 2016) this year. It's smaller than melbourne's but in return you actually get more contact and interaction time and decent (non-rushed) answers in the pannel sessions. There has also been suprise guests most years. The theme this year is Magica vs Mecha.
They cover the areas of an Artist Alley, Exhibitors Hall (cheap too), Cosplay Competitions, Tournaments (some of those that attend get seriously involved), Special Guests & Panels, A Maids and Butlers Café (at decent prices not rip-off), A Gaming Zone, and of course MUCH Anime!
A couple of years ago we even got a free 'master lesson' from a Mangaka and Anime Artist working together to show a simple beginners level how-to-start-to-animate process from your Manga Storyboards.
